"Thank You doesn't begin to cover it. But it's a GOOD place to start."

The picture above depicts brave soldiers from Afghanistan standing beside each other for a photograph to thank the people involved with Operation Gratitude. This ad is an example of ethos because these men in uniform are members of the army which concludes to be an example of automatic ethos, because of the status they pledge. Whilst viewing this ad, one might acknowledge the experience and sincerity it delivers, and because of that recognition, the viewer would have a reason for trying to grasp the meaning of the given subject matter. This ad would be an example of logos because of the website the ad provides. The website www.OperationGratitude.com  would be considered to be logos because visiting this website would give the viewer a clear main idea, using specific details, examples, facts, statistics, or expert testimony to back it up. This given evidence can be immensely persuasive to the viewer. This ad is an example of pathos because it appeals to the emotions of a viewer. Whilst the viewer observes the presented image, their emotions might differ with sympathy, hopefulness, attentiveness, courteousness, inspiration, et cetera. The given website may also be considered to be pathos, because it may give the viewer the sudden urge and desire to try to give back to these men and women. Overall, this advertisement is effective, because it achieves a desired emotional effect, it is persuasive and truthful, it considers its audience, it leaves an unforgettable mark in one's mind, and uses all three major appeals.

  1. Wow Gohar this advertisement was excellent! Actually, excellent is an understatement, it was outstanding! You did a grand job on picking this advertisement. Although, I thought the website was an ethos appeal instead of logos but besides that everything else seems splendid. Also, wonderful use of vocabulary and proper grammar.

  2. Gohar, you did an excellent job pointing out all three of the appeals within the pathos. You clearly explained them to the audience in a quick, right to the point, way. I especially liked the part about the pathos, because I was feeling the same things while looking at the advertisement. Good job!

  3. This advertisement clearly affects viewers in an emotional way. It was important that you mentioned the inspiration shown by this advertisement. Most viewers would realize this image as people risking their lives for a country, a noble act. I agree that the main purpose of this advertisement is to bring awareness of the brave soldiers that protect their country. I think you did a fantastic job with this advertisement by describing the emotional part of it, which was the main reason of the image.

  5. Gohar, you did an astounding job analyzing this advertisement. I did not even realize that the name of the organization, "Operation Gratitude," could be interpreted as an appeal to pathos as well until you pointed it out. You have a keen eye for detail and a way with words that makes me like what you write, no matter the content. The true cynosure of this post, however, lies in the fact that you chose THIS advertisement to analyze above all others that exist, which shows the kind of person you are- willing to help those in need and to inspire others to do the same.

  9. Gohar, I enjoyed your choice of this ad specifically, as it is both humbling and sincere, without showing an aggressive, forceful sense of patriotism. Your description of the presented pathos, logos, and ethos is both detailed and precise. I appreciate your analysis of all three appeals, and find your stressing on pathos to be accurate, as it is the appeal that spoke to me the loudest. Fantastic.

  11. Reading this post made me want to visit the site that was mentioned. Gohar, reading this made it easy for me to spot the ethos, pathos, and logos that was used to create this ad. The way that this ad was analyzed astonished me, every word that was written was accurate and looking at the ad now I can understand why the troops deserve our support.

  12. Gohar I truly enjoyed reading your opinion of this advertisement which is heartwarming for people like me who have a special place in their hearts for those brave soldiers who fight for us. However, I do not agree that the men in uniform are an example of automatic ethos. A politician like Barack Obama would be recognized on and off the streets wearing anything he wishes. But these men only get recognition of their time served in the army while wearing the uniform or revealing it to an individual, hence this being an example of building ethos. Other than that, your advertisement was a favorable choice.

You have done an outstanding job interpreting and decoding every detail and emphasizing the importance of pathos, which is the most apparent appeal in this advertisement.

  15. Gohar’s advertisement analysis was intelligently written and well planned. She used vocabulary words from the chapter well and had a firm understanding of the topics used to persuade the audience in the advertisement. Her vocabulary was thoroughly thought out and the piece as a whole had no grammatical errors or spelling mistakes.
